Summer Garden: Be careful what you wish for Print E-mail

We wished that our fruit blossoms not be zapped by late freezes this year. And somehow we dodged that bullet (unlike last year when all fruit was lost). At this point, it looks as if we may actually have a bumper crop of peaches, a few plums, and a few pears on our young trees. ---Too soon yet to know about persimmons, pomegranates, grapes and pecans.

Dear Editor:
I live right across the street from Trinity Lutheran church. When I decided to buy a piano from their garage sale, I was told that some men would roll it to my house. I don’t know think that I, or anyone else involved, had any idea the science and physical labor that lied in the task ahead of them.
I can’t recall exact numbers, but I know that a team of 6 to 8 men, a pallet, several pieces of plywood, a couple of dollies, and some others (like myself), for moral support, were all involved in the adventure. The men moving the piano were fantastic sports about it. They moved this very heavy, upright piano from inside the church to exactly where it is in my bedroom across the street. They laughed and joked the entire time. During this time I had several invites to attend their church. Toward the end of that long journey, I was unsure if they were truly invites or threats. All joking aside, the people of Trinity Lutheran Church are some of the friendliest, selfless people in Clifton.
Thanks again to all who helped!
Kristi Poole

Just a note to say thanks for the articles on the Iredell VFW Fish Fry. With everyone’s help it was another banner year for the post event. We fed over 450 people and received some nice donations for homeless vets.

I was amazed Friday night when many Cliftonites made the treacherous drive to watch the Cubs take on Little River Academy. There were news reports of evacuations taking place along Salado Creek. Driving was difficult at best as the sky poured down what we later learned was an amazing 13 inches of rain.

Cub Stadium came alive this past Friday night when the Clifton Cubs took to the field. Fans filled the stands and lined the fences to catch a glimpse of the 2009 Clifton Cub football team. An intense energy filled the air as if a storm was brewing.

Just read where our VA Administration in Washington awarded themselves 24 million dollars in bonuses while we have veterans waiting to get their first checks from that agency.
This is a final blow for me — our government, in my mind, is not labeled “Camp Run Amuck!”

The Clifton Record
The Bosque County Wide Garage Sale event last Friday and Saturday was my first and I must say, it was something I’ve never seen before. We know there were 196 sales held by folks all over the county who actually paid and signed up through the Bosque County Extension Office, but we have no idea how many other folks decided to hold a sale of their own without become an “official” part of the event. We also don’t know how many actually shopped and where they came from, but I can tell you it was between a lot and a whole lot.
The sun wasn’t up good Friday morning and folks were already prowling, looking for that special treasure or just cheap books. The variety of items for sale was mind boggling too, so if you were part of it, I hope you sold or bought exactly what you had planned.
